Oven Not Heating? Bake Element, Igniter, or Sensor.
An oven that won't heat splits hard between gas and electric. On electric, it's almost always the bake element. On gas, it's almost always the igniter. The third common cause — wrong temperature — is usually the sensor.
What's actually wrong
Element burns through — visible break or open circuit. Most common electric oven failure.
Glow-bar igniter weakens. Doesn't get hot enough to ignite the gas. The flame sensor never opens the gas valve.
Reads wrong temperature. Oven heats but to wrong temp. $30 part typically.
Board controls power to the elements. Failure stops heating entirely.
Sometimes the broil element fails but bake works — or vice versa. Diagnose which.
Quick checks you can do
- Set the oven to 350°F and check with an independent thermometer after 20 minutes.
- Look at the bake element (electric) for visible breaks or burn marks.
- Listen for the igniter (gas) glowing and the gas valve opening.
Bake elements and igniters are easy to swap. The diagnosis is what we do faster — confirming with a multimeter before quoting.
